Background

The problems about elderly care and the people giving nursing care have arisen along with the gradually increasing elderly population in the world. Even though not all the elderly are sick or in need, they become dependent on others in their daily life activities as a result of the losses. image1With the increase in dependency level, elderly care is being considered as a hard, extensive and expensive service. Home care services are increasingly extended and accepted in respect of health protection and improving the quality of life. Generally, the spouse and the children of the elderly, mostly the women, are held accountable in home care of the elderly. In addition to the obligation of caring for the elderly and undertaking a lot of responsibility at home, the informal care givers may have some physical, mental, social and economical disruptions (fatigue, exhaustion, loneliness, corrosion in the family relations, fail to afford the care, etc.) which are defined as “care load” or “care stress”.“Nurse Managed Care for Elderly - NMCE” not only aims to find solutions to psychosocial problems of informal caregivers and nurses' approach towards these problems but also to meet the needs of the elderly living in the society.  Through cost-effective and innovative practices such as NMCE aiming at providing service to the elderly, an opportunity will be created to improve and compare the European dimension and improve the quality.
The European countries with a high level of elderly population focus on solution packages which consider the position of the elderly under a new category of human rights and citizenship rights and facilitate daily life. Saving the elderly population from isolation and exclusion is a major problem in today's world. In this project, nurses will give assistance for psychosocial problems, healthcare problems and needs of informal caregivers and health care of the elderly at home and thus facilitate.
The health system must be restructured in line with the arising conditions in order to ensure provision of appropriate services to the ageing population. In this project, the elderly are a special group in need of care of others in daily life activities due to functional losses. The informal caregivers  who undertake the responsibility of providing health care at home can be regarded within the disadvantaged group in some aspects.image2
NMCE Project will define the learning needs of nurses and informal caregivers. Common approaches will be developed to support informal caregivers as adults and improve competences and health care qualities of nurses in training. On the other hand, local and regional cooperation will gradually be enhanced between the nursing training institutions and other institutions in order to improve health care services to the elderly at home.
Through NMCE, nurses will be trained in psychosocial approach and informal caregivers will be provided supportive training so that the burden on informal care givers will be relieved. In cooperation with the organizations within the project, different practices will be examined; common training materials will be developed and exchanged. In Europe, cooperation between various institutions will develop and the quality and quantity of service will be improved through training of informal caregivers
In this project, thimage3e nurses will contribute to lifelong learning of the elderly through training of informal caregivers in order to support the informal caregivers at home and the elderly as the disadvantaged group.
Transfer among the participating countries will be promoted by contacting informal caregivers and the elderly through nurses, provision of physical and psychosocial assistance to those, and development of training materials and NMCE web site under this project by means of “Nurse Managed Care for Elderly - NMCE” as an innovative model.
This project will contribute to readiness to care of people with special needs such as the elderly by assisting training and psychosocial assistance of especially nurses and informal caregivers.
